The discussion, moderated by SYS-CON.TV host Jeremy Geelan, was animated, informed, and wide-ranging and covered everything from the origins of the term "Cloud Computing" itself, around the time when a variety of companies were experimenting with IT elasticity as a concept, to the reasons for its rapid adoption, including by Federal government agencies - since by moving existing applications to remote locations or adopting remote applications entirely, agencies are likely to reduce equipment, software licensing, energy, and IT support costs.

Dr. Werner Vogels is Vice President & Chief Technology Officer at Amazon.com where he is responsible for driving the company's technology vision. Prior to joining Amazon, he worked as a research scientist at Cornell University where he was a principal investigator in several research projects that target the scalability and robustness of mission-critical enterprise computing systems. Vogels holds a Ph.D. from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and has authored close to 80 articles for journals and conferences, most of them on distributed systems technologies for enterprise computing.

JOHN ENGATES - CTO, Rackspace
John Engates is CTO of Rackspace. He joined the company in August of 2000 and has worked in several areas of Rackspace including Operations, Professional Services and Customer Care. Most recently, Engates has been responsible for managing the ongoing development of Rackspace's Intensive segment. He was one of the leading forces behind Rackspace's Microsoft Gold Certification. Prior to joining Rackspace, Engates was a founder of Internet Direct, one of the oldest and largest Internet service providers in Texas.

ROD FONTECILLA - Principal, Booz Allen Hamilton

Dr. Rod Fontecilla is a Principal at Booz Allen Hamilton. He has over 25 years of professional experience in the design, development, implementation, and management of Large Information Management Systems. He is an expert in the field of Computer Science within the federal government and private sectors. Dr. Fontecilla has Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and previously served as a Professor at the University of Maryland Computer Science Department before entering the consulting industry.

HAL STERN - CTO of Global Sales & Services, Sun Microsystems

Hal Stern is a Distinguished Engineer and Vice President of Global Systems Engineering at Sun Microsystems. His responsibilities include technical leadership, training, and management of Sun's customer engineering teams in Global Sales and Services. Hal's current projects include security architecture, cloud computing design patterns, and large-scale analytics and data management. Hal was involved in both the Sun ONE and Liberty Alliance Project architectures from their formative stages, and has been working with teams open sourcing Sun software projects.

Last week, while in San Francisco, I used the Uber app and service four times. All four experiences were great, although one of the drivers stopped for 30 seconds and then left as I was walking up to the car. He must have realized I was a blogger. None the less, the next car was just a minute away and I suffered no pain. In this article, my colleague, Ved Sen, Global Head, Advisory Services Social, Mobile and Sensors at Cognizant shares his experiences and insights.
We are reaching the end of the beginning with WebRTC and real systems using this technology have begun to appear. One challenge that faces every WebRTC deployment (in some form or another) is identity management. For example, if you have an existing service – possibly built on a variety of different PaaS/SaaS offerings – and you want to add real-time communications you are faced with a challenge relating to user management, authentication, authorization, and validation. Service providers will want to use their existing identities, but these will have credentials already that are (hopefully) irreversibly encoded. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Peter Dunkley, Technical Director at Acision, will look at how this identity problem can be solved and discuss ways to use existing web identities for real-time communication.

This is one example of WebRTC adoption today, but the potential is limitless when powered by IoT. Attendees will learn real-world benefits of WebRTC and explore future possibilities, as WebRTC and IoT intersect to improve customer service.
From telemedicine to smart cars, digital homes and industrial monitoring, the explosive growth of IoT has created exciting new business opportunities for real time calls and messaging.
