Oracle, the company that the European Commission thinks can't be trusted with an open source database, trotted out Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 the other day.
The new release of the database family that's as open source as MySQL offers high availability, enhanced scalability and high performance, the kind of functionality generally associated with Oracle's own database.
Berkeley DB Java Edition is a transactional storage engine for key-value pairs written entirely in Java that can be deployed as an embedded or so-called edge database, so developers can build applications that don't need any manual administration. It now includes new replication features for high availability and scalability and performance improvements for highly concurrent applications.
