CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 01/05/10 -- Reviewing health insurance rates and benefits isn't likely high on most people's list of New Year's resolutions. But for anyone who has had their health insurance coverage for a year or more, then it's a good idea to schedule a health plan check-up.
Why?
Save money. Because most individual health insurance plans tend to adjust rates at the end of the year, consumers could find themselves paying more than last year. One way to avoid a higher premium is to switch to a different plan or even a different carrier.
According to Brandon Cruz, President and CTO of Norvax, Inc., the parent company of GoHealthInsurance.com, an agent in their nationwide network recently moved several clients to a different plan after hearing of a carrier discount and effectively saved them all 10 percent in premiums.
Customize coverage. Because your personal health can also change from year to year, it's a good idea to check that your plan will provide the coverage you need for 2010. For example, you might not need that extra prescription drug coverage now that you've recovered from a 2009 illness. Or you might want to add maternity care to your plan if you think you might be starting a family in the near future.
"Policyholders should review their health insurance situation with an agent at least once a year," says Cruz. "Those who are active health insurance consumers can save money and make sure they have the best coverage for their individual needs."
And for people who don't have any coverage, added Cruz, 2010 is the year to find an affordable health insurance policy.
