Meg & Carly Win California Primaries

Both women ultimately won in a walk, largely on the back of their ad campaigns

Silicon Valley's two divas, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman and former HP CEO Carly Fiorina, won their respective Republican primaries in California Tuesday night.

Whitman will run against Democratic nominee Jerry Brown, now the state's attorney general, for governor, succeeding Arnold Schwarzenegger. And Fiorina will try to knock three-term incumbent Barbara Boxer out of the U.S. Senate come November.

Both women ultimately won in a walk, largely on the back of their ad campaigns. Carly had the tougher go.

In her victory speech Whitman said, "Career politicians in Sacramento and Washington, DC, be warned because you now face your biggest nightmare: Two businesswomen who know how to create jobs, balance budgets and get things done."

California's economy, which hit the wall running, will likely dominate the election debate. Famous for its lavish spending, it's basically run out of money and has the third-highest unemployment rate in the country.

Whitman, who reportedly spent a record $81 million winning the nomination, is backing targeted tax cuts and an enforced spending cap. It's unclear what former Governor Brown's remedy for the state's ills would be. Fiorina wants to see income and capital gain taxes cut, estate taxes eliminated and incentives given to small businesses to spark hiring.
