Oracle To Release No-Cost Entry-Level 10g Database Today

Entry-Level Version of 10g Will Only Run Servers with 1 Processor and 4GB of Disk Memory

Andrew Mendelsohn (pictured), senior vice president of Oracle's server technologies division, has given a briefing to CNET in which he says that a new low-end edition of Oracle's 10g database called Oracle 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) will be beta-released by Oracle onTuesday.

Then aim of Oracle Database XE is to provide Oracle with something with which to compete against free and open-source alternatives to Oracle's 10g such as MySQL, Postgres, and EnterpriseDB.

Mendelsohn told CNET:

"There is definitely a market there (for low-end databases) and a demand. And we want them to be using Oracle and not MySQL or SQL Server Express."

EnterpriseDB has been making such rapid inroads on the free-database market that industry maven Bill Roth has even suggested that it could be the beginning of the end of Oracle's business model. "After working with EnterpriseDB it on WebLogic Server 9," Roth has written, "I have found that it is very reliable and appears to be very scalable."

EnterpriseDB, based in Edison, New Jersey, announced its database offering In an exclusive SYS-CON.TV interview In May. Andy Astor, co-founder and CEO said in the interview that their company's strategy will initially target MySQL in its quest for new customers. The co-founders stressed that MySQL is their initial competition, but mentioned that they will eventually be competing for Oracle customers as well.

It would seem from tomorrow's news, if it turns out to be accurate, that Oracle isn't just going to wait around for that to happen.

It's not a rumor. It's the real McCoy, it's free and it works like a champ on Linux. Personally I'd say it competes with MS Access as well - yippee to scalable home-built apps.
