Everyone knows that the iPhone cracked open the lockhold that Blackberry had on corporate enterprise. There still are holdouts but they are converting quickly as executives bring iPhones and iPads to work and mandate IT support. Even though Android shipments are impressive, the numbers supported by corporations are still a niche compared to Blackberry or iPhone. The new ATRIX smartphone may change all that. Motorola calls it the world's most powerful smartphone, which based on the specs is defendable. Others call it the NirvanaPhone based on a new feature that allows the phone to be docked to a full-sized PC display, TV or Laptop dock.

This feature called webtop will run Firefox and Citrix Receiver, essentially making the entire web plus company applications and data available anywhere. Imagine traveling with only a smartphone knowing that you can plug-in anywhere and get real work done with a full-sized display, keyboard and mouse accessing a virtual desktop from work. Motorola is now running teaser ads that could entice execs and road warriors tired of lugging laptops everywhere they go. When the execs start bringing this device to work, the resistance from IT may not exist as previous new entries. They can keep company data off the device and on company virtual desktops. Connecting an ATRIX to the company environment may be as simple as  navigating to the company logon page and entering user credentials. The existing concerns about Android may not apply as long as company data stays in the data center. Many CIO's may also start looking at the device as a single solution for many employees vs. a smartphone plus laptop plus disaster recovery setup.

We will see the real reaction from IT shortly when the ATRIX starts shipping later in 1Q as promised by Motorola. Perhaps the winner of the Consumer Electronic Show best smartphone award will also be a winner in the enterprise.
