PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/16/06 -- Philadelphia sister stations CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and UPN 57 (WPSG-TV) are staying in the City. When the stations' leases on Independence Mall expire next Spring, Philadelphia's only television duopoly will relocate its broadcast facility to 1500 Spring Garden Street, just six blocks North of City Hall.
The stations signed a 20-year lease yesterday with Amerimar Enterprises Inc. for approximately 120,000 square feet at 1500 Spring Garden to house its studios and office space. About 350 employees will relocate to the custom-designed space in March, 2007. The staff is currently split between its offices at 5th and Market Streets and in leased space at the Bourse building next door. Sister stations KYW Newsradio and 94.1 FREE FM WYSP are also located at 5th and Market Streets. They have not yet announced their relocation plans.
The Philadelphia office of Hillier Architecture is designing the new headquarters for the stations that will include a private entrance, two television studios, office space, an airy public meeting space with skylights and state-of-the-art communications and satellite facilities. The new facility is approximately 30 percent larger than the space currently occupied by the stations, and, with major highway access nearby, is ideally located for newsgathering.
"The selection of the 1500 Spring Garden site is the result of a search that has been going on for more than three years, both inside and outside the City of Philadelphia," says CBS 3 and UPN 57 President and General Manager Michael Colleran. "Our history and our roots are here in Philadelphia," Colleran says. "Channel 3 was the first television station on the air in this market, and it was our hope and our intention since the beginning of this process to maintain our commitment to, and our presence in, the City of Philadelphia, the heart of our region. We are delighted that this location enables us to do that and continue to serve our viewing audience and our community."
CBS 3 has been broadcasting from its Independence Mall studios since 1972. Sister station UPN 57 joined the station there in 2000 when it became part of the CBS family.
CBS 3 and UPN 57 are part of the CBS Television Stations division, one of the largest network-owned station groups, consisting of 21 CBS stations, 15 UPN, one WB and two stations not affiliated with major networks.
