India Builds its Biggest Computer Yet

India has built its biggest computer yet, a machine using IBM's Power4 chips and either Linux or IBM's proprietary Unix, AIX. The Linux version supports only 32 processors; the AIX version 248.

Still modest by comparison to the developed world, the new Indian machine, developed by the Center for Development of Advanced Computers, should be able to do a maximum of one teraflop a second.

Its developers position the machine as a step on the way to creating a grid of supercomputers for weather forecasting and bioinformatics.

China just unveiled its ultimate machine, the Dawning 4000L, based on 644 Intel chips and capable of 3 teraflops.
