Sun Will Alter Java License To Make Bundling JRE with Linux Easier

Java could well become ubiquitous in Linux distributions. Reports are trickling in, notes Erik Thauvin on his Linkblog, that Sun plans to alter the Java license to make it easier to bundle the JRE with Linux. Allowing Linux distros to include the JRE by default would save users from the well-known risk of failure during installation.

Speaking on Thursday during a press teleconference, a company spokeman - Laura Tolson, a VP in the Java platform group - said that the license changes are aimed at making Java easier to work with for those using an open-source OS such as OpenSolaris or Linux.

Any formal announcement will almost certainly be held back till Sun's JavaOne Conference next week in San Francisco.

There is no doubt everyone would be better off in the SUN JDK and JRE were included in Linux distros. Working this out and making it happen would be a great step forward.

Can we rely on Sun not to use its CDDL license, and instead come out with someothng everyone recognizes as "open" open source rather than half-closed?

Why does Sun have to open source the JRE in order to have it bundled?

I don't remember seeing anything in the GPL that says it can't share disk space with non-GPL binaries.

Is this what is meant by "choice"?
