Here are the top cyber news and stories of the day.
- Internet co-founder Cerf appointed to NSF – Vint Cerf, who helped found the internet, is joining the National Science Board of the NSF. He also helped create MCI Mail, one of the first digital mail systems. Via FedScoop, more here.
- Malware masquerades as patch for Java - Trend Micro has seen a few pieces of malware in the wild that pretends to be real patch for the recently hacked Java. This software, if installed, adds a backdoor to your system which connects to a remote server. Via ComputerWorld, more here.
- White House: Information sharing a ‘key ingredient’ in cyber efforts - Michael Daniel, the White House cybersecurity coordinator, believes that information sharing is the way ahead in cyber efforts. The White House’s new strategy emphasizes collaboration in forms, including public-private partnership. Via Federal News Radio, more here.
- Big Data, Cloud Security Tops the List of IBM Patents in 2012 - The Patent and Trade Office issued over 250,000 patents in 2012. 6478 of those patents were recorded by IBM alone. IBM’s patents include patents in area such as analytics, big data, cyber-security, cloud, mobile, social networking, and software-defined environments, as well as industry solutions for retail, banking, health care and transportation. - Blue Button set for improvements - The January 6 draft implementation guide for the Blue Button set standards for how semi-structured data can be securely transmitted by medical providers. The intent is that users would be able to just download all of their healthcare records at once. Via FierceGovernmentIT, more here.
- Security vendors failing to tackle mobile malware, say CISOs – Most mobile device management (MDM) strategies tend to focus on securing the physical device in case of loss of theft, rather than protecting from cyber threats, according to Peter Gibbons, head of Information Security at Network Rail. While the vast majority of all malware is for PC, the amount of mobile malware is skyrocketing, and mobile devices need to be secured. Via ComputerWorld, more here.
- HP selected for $543 million VA IDIQ – The Real-Time Location System for the VA will be designed to deploy a management system that will assist in the automation and improvement of operations and veteran healthcare services. They will equip a wide variety of facilities with these real-time location technologies. The intent is to improve quality of care and tracking for veterans and services. Via FedScoop, more here.
