PALO ALTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/31/06 -- AppStream, Inc., a leader in on-demand application deployment and management, today announced the availability of AppStream 5.0. The company also announced a promotional offer for a limited time that allows customers to qualify for free extended maintenance by signing up for an online demonstration at www.appstream.com.
AppStream allows any Windows application to be distributed or "streamed" to a PC, then executed by the end user without the need for local software installs. This technique known as application streaming delivers application bits on demand, and ensures the application behaves as if it were installed using conventional methods (i.e.: CD ROM install).
AppStream 5.0 further helps organizations reduce IT costs and labor associated with distributing and managing applications to the desktop. AppStream makes it possible for IT teams to instantly distribute software like Adobe PhotoShop and Microsoft Office. Additionally, AppStream serves as an automated license management platform which enforces license compliance, helps IT administrators prevent piracy and optimizes the use of software assets. Finally, AppStream offers third party software virtualization support for its streaming customers, giving them extraordinary levels of flexibility for streamlined application delivery. AppStream 5.0 supports application virtualization solutions from best-of-breed vendors like Thinstall.
"We are pleased that AppStream is offering virtualization support as part of their industry leading streaming solution," said Rosie Pongracz, vice president of sales and marketing, Thinstall. "The combination of products between AppStream and Thinstall offers a very powerful solution and helps make software delivery simple and secure."
Unlike other streaming application delivery offerings that force users to be networked and log onto a site each time they want to use software, AppStream allows users to work offline and remotely, wherever and whenever they want. This allows even the traditionally most expensive end-user environments to be supported, like mobile laptop and remote or at-home users.
"We were looking for a powerful desktop application management solution in order to reduce IT costs, improve security and enable students to work from any location, not just the computer labs," said Jason Hyams, director of technology at St. Agnes. "After evaluating other premier streaming offerings, we selected AppStream as our sole application deployment and management vendor. Within one afternoon St. Agnes was able to evaluate AppStream technology using an online demonstration. By the end of the week, St. Agnes deployed applications to 850 students who were then immediately PC-ready."
Key features in AppStream 5.0 include:
-- Optional Virtualization: offers virtualization as an option to those
customers that require it through solutions from best-of-breed vendors like
Thinstall;
-- Performance Enhancements: provides streaming performance enhancements
of up to 40% on first use of all packaged applications, with particular
improvements for MSI packages;
-- Interoperability and Compatibility: applications streamed with
AppStream 5.0 are fully interoperable with other desktop applications and
behave as if they were installed using conventional methods;
-- Simplified Packaging: streamlines and speeds up the application
packaging process by making greater use of default settings; and now
includes full support of existing MSI packages;
-- Population of Icons: adds icons of each application onto the user's
desktop to further promote transparency of streaming technology and alert
user of newly provisioned applications. This is particularly beneficial for
remote software access and removes the need to log onto a site each time
software access is needed;
-- Administration Features: new reporting capabilities and heightened
control features help IT departments better understand user needs, usage
patterns and take appropriate action quickly and more efficiently. Usage
tracking and reporting can take place on a granular level;
-- Unicode Compliance: AppStream now supports distribution of
applications to Non-English speaking countries.
Licensing and Availability
AppStream 5.0 is available immediately at the list price of $75.00 per seat. Standard volume and educational discounts apply.
"Our continuing investment in streaming and virtualization allows our customers to make better use of their IT budget, so critical in today's economy," said Brad Rowland, vice president of marketing and product management, AppStream. "Our ability to deploy any Windows application as a hosted service dramatically reduces management and support costs resulting in more productivity for end users and stronger bottom line for businesses. The robust and scalable features of AppStream 5.0 are another step forward in our vision of removing technology barriers to access and providing innovative solutions for the market through our best of breed industry partnerships."
