IBM Introduces Platform Resource Scheduler for OpenStack Cloud Management

Plug-in scheduler allows dynamic infrastructure resource management based on intelligent, policy-driven scheduling features

IBM is strengthening its software defined environment (SDE) portfolio with the introduction of IBM Platform Resource Scheduler, a dynamic resource management tool for private and public OpenStack cloud that automatically allocates the right resources to the right job, balances workload demand with infrastructure supply and ensures adherence to service level agreements.

"IBM Platform Resource Scheduler provides a fully virtualized, open and programmable architecture that ensures enterprises are taking advantage of all available cloud resources - from application software licenses to available network bandwidth," said Jay Muelhoefer, Director Strategy, IBM Platform Computing. "IBM Platform Resource Scheduler is an important building block of SDE and helps cloud clients optimize infrastructure usage, reduce cost of cloud ownership, and deliver higher workload quality of service."

IBM Platform Resource Scheduler includes a comprehensive set of intelligent, policy-driven scheduling features that provides continuous resource optimization, refinement of hypervisor placement decisions based usage and workload patterns evolve. It employs the virtual machine (VM) live migration capabilities to seamlessly re-balance VMs to meet specific business objectives without user or administrator intervention.

IBM Platform Resource Scheduler extends OpenStack's Nova scheduler capabilities by including rich set of out-of-the-box policies on which resource selections can be made. Additionally it provides a versatile SQL-like query language that allows cloud administrators to match workloads to resources in a more precise manner, presenting the opportunity to improve hardware utilization and service levels.

IBM Platform Resource Scheduler is supported across IBM's portfolio of OpenStack-based cloud management solutions including IBM SmartCloud® Entry and IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator.

By using IBM Platform Resource Scheduler in conjunction with OpenStack cloud environments, managers of cloud infrastructures can improve quality of service for cloud tenants by avoiding scenarios where hypervisor resources become oversubscribed , manage complex, heterogeneous cloud environments more effectively and reduce management efforts by better automating cloud operations and improve average utilization reducing infrastructure costs and accommodating additional tenants on existing infrastructure
