Brendan O’Brien: I have to say I’ve never seen so much buzz about anything

In this @ThingsExpo Power Panel, on June 9 at our New York City studio, @ThingsExpo conference chair Roger Strukhoff led a discussion with panelists Mac Devine, Distinguished Engineer at IBM; Jonas Jacobi, Co-Founder & President of Kaazing; Chad Jones, Vice President, Product Strategy for LogMeIn's Xively IoT Platform; Nick Landry, a Senior Technical Evangelist at Microsoft, and Brendan O'Brien, Co-founder at Aria Systems on how the future of computing lies in things and how, as computing takes a much more active role in our lives, it will at the same time become much more invisible.

Brendan O’Brien: “At Cloud Expo in NYC last week I sat in on the Internet of Things power panel and then presented about how to monetize the Internet of Things. The room was packed, standing room only and I stuck around for a full 30 minutes afterwards answering questions before I had to tear myself away. Wow, I have to say I’ve never seen so much buzz about anything. And this isn’t my first rodeo. The interest in all things IoT is nothing short of amazing, and we’ve only just begun. Take a look!”

The Internet of Things is the biggest idea since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.

Why? Because the "things" are not just desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. The "things" come from the world of sensor-driven Big Data that is even now expanding the size of the Web beyond what we thought just a few years ago.

How big? Estimates from everyone from Gartner to the US Government foresee a 100X time increase - then a 1,000X increase - in Web traffic over the next few years. The world will need hundreds of billions of dollars of new servers, memory, storage, and data centers. The challenge to software developers will be increasing as never before.

Panelist Bios
Roger Strukhoff
is Executive Director of the Tau Institute for Global ICT Studies, with offices in Illinois and Manila. He is Conference Chair of @ThingsExpo and WebRTC Summit. He has a BA from Knox College, Certificate in Tech Writing from UC-Berkeley, and MBA studies at CSU-East Bay. He serves on the board of the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, and has served as Director, U.S. Coast Guard Aux Int'l Affairs.

Mac Devine, Distinguished Engineer at IBM has 24 years of experience with networking and virtualization. He currently serves as the Director of CloudFirst Innovation and CTO for the IBM Cloud Services Division.

Jonas Jacobi is Co-Founder & President of Kaazing. He has 21 years of experience leading the development of innovative technology products and services. Together with Kaazing's Co-Founder & CTO John Fallows, he pioneered and championed the groundbreaking HTML5 WebSocket standard.

Chad Jones, Vice President, Product Strategy for LogMeIn's Xively IoT Platform, has eighteen years' experience driving strategic initiatives in IoT, cloud, virtualization and infrastructure while evangelizing the vision of a better world through technology. At LogMeIn, he drives product and go-to-market strategy for the company's Xively IoT platform as well as evangelizes the company's vision for the Internet of Things.

Brendan O'Brien is a Co-founder at Aria Systems and the inventor of cloud billing. It is fair to say he introduced the world to cloud billing, and innovated database-driven, enterprise-grade web applications - before the concept of "cloud" was even on the horizon. O'Brien is at the forefront of the recurring revenue revolution that is empowering enterprises -- and specifically enabling information systems and new business models to secure predictive revenue streams while improving business processes.

Nick Landry (@ActiveNick) is a Senior Technical Evangelist at Microsoft. He is a mobility pioneer specializing in the design and production of mobile applications for consumers and the enterprise using diverse cross-platform technologies including Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS, Android, Mobile Web, Xamarin and PhoneGap. Nick works at Microsoft as a Senior Technical Evangelist in the New York Metro area and engages with developers, students and IT pros to help them learn, adopt and use the Microsoft developer platform to design and build the next generation of apps for Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Windows Azure. Nick is also a Nokia Developer Ambassador whose mandate is to educate and support Windows Phone developers to maximize their success.
