APX Labs Announces 2015 Wearable Technology Predictions

Predictions Explore: the Future of Glass, the Invisible Wearable Revolution and What Will Soar and Sink for Wearables in 2015

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- APX Labs, whose software platform Skylight is enabling enterprises to unlock the power of smart glasses for their workforce, today unveiled their top predictions on what business and consumers can expect to see in the upcoming wearable tech revolution. The findings give valuable insight on what will happen in the wearable tech industry in 2015 from a leading developer of solutions that work across multiple smart glasses. As speculation swirls around smart glasses, APX Labs is uniquely situated to comment on the future of wearables.

"This year was tremendous for the wearable tech industry in general," said Brian Ballard, CEO and co-founder, APX Labs. "Deloitte estimates that wearable technology will close out 2014 by generating nearly $3 billion. This coming year, smart glasses will establish their place in the enterprise, even if it's invisible to consumers. And we see big changes in the space as more people get into, and out of, the wearable tech game."

APX Labs' 2015 Wearable Tech Predictions, include:

  1. The Invisible Wearable Revolution Will Happen in the Workplace – While consumers may have seen smart glasses in public in 2014, workplace scenarios will accelerate rapidly in 2015. Even as smart glasses become common for doctors and police, this will be just the tip of the wearable tech iceberg. The vast majority of wearable tech users will be behind the scenes employees in warehouses, on manufacturing lines, in the field and in construction. Enterprise scenarios present a significantly lower barrier for broad adoption of smart glasses, overcoming economic, social and privacy concerns.
  2. Watches and Smart Glasses Will Address Different Uses – With their different capability profiles, battery life and processing paradigms, developers will begin to focus their attention on developing applications tailored to the strengths of each.
  3. Wearable Software "App" Developers Will Struggle To Generate Revenue – As indicated by venture capital activities in 2014 skewing heavily towards the enterprise software companies and the Glass Collective winding down its consumer application investment efforts, there is a clear indicator that the majority of the successful wearable tech software companies will be platform developers driving business value in the enterprise.
  4. Google Faces Android Fragmentation on Smart Glasses in 2015 – Google has unified the Android-based smart watches market with a successful launch of Android Wear. However, as the market continues to expand with more entrants, Google runs the risk of having to deal with fragmented Android user experiences along with an app store and a developer ecosystem with no framework to unify them.
  5. More Big Companies Will Enter the Wearable Space, but Only a Few Will Actually Succeed – Big companies who fail to take the time to target the right set of users, whether in consumer and/or enterprise applications, and understand their requirements, will see limited success with their products. This is especially true with wearable technology, which by nature is ripe for personalization and intimacy because they are wearable.
  6. Fitness-only Wearable Devices: The Next Netbooks? – Fitness tracking wearable companies must reinvent their business model to counter smart watches, which incorporate the same sensors and basic features. If they fail to differentiate with an enhanced software layer, design and price they will go the way that netbooks did once iPads came along.
