Would Extra Funding Make Your Life as a DBA Easier? | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps

You have thave the pull to request funding for projects

Database administrators are responsible for key tasks throughout the organization, including maintaining data performance and security, among plenty of other critical roles. With so many responsibilities and first-hand experience, DBAs have the pull to request funding for projects. Unfortunately, not all of these staff members are successful in earning such finances.

Go to the higher-ups

The key to receiving any funding for projects is to communicate with stakeholders early on in the process. DBAs should emphasize the backup windows, security and scope when explaining the initiative to the higher-ups.

It is also important to remember that stakeholders are also invested in what DBAs oversee. Showing how the project will benefit the entire organization should improve the chances of receiving funding.

Justify the costs

Companies are not likely to hand over a check for any funding until they understand all the costs involved. DBAs must not only present the idea of what they plan to do with the money for their project, they must also justify the expenditures required, as well as show how the business will achieve greater efficiency or reduced data warehousing costs.

DBAs able to present all of these points will be in great position to convince their employers to get behind their vision.

Highlight the cross-department benefits

If project funding is allocated to just one department - IT - it could actually harm a DBA's chances of receiving assistance. Employees will fare far better if they highlight how other corporate teams will benefit from the project, as well as detail how the money will support the company's corporate goals.

Emphasize disasters

Organizations, regardless of size or industry, can experience disruptions that negatively harm operational efficiency. For DBAs looking to receive funding, this is the perfect opportunity to focus on the damages caused by disasters. By telling stakeholders that the money will go toward improving response capabilities, DBAs should improve their chances of fulfilling their goals.

Don't be afraid to fail

DBAs are unlikely to always succeed in asking for funding, so it is important to not give up if stakeholders continue to reject proposals. Personnel who press on by updating their projects to address any concerns the higher-ups have will show they have a drive that may impress corporate leaders to reconsider their stance.

By following these simple yet effective tips, DBAs should achieve the results they crave for their projects.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
