Buy a cloud, any cloud you like and stick it on whatever application and data storage, management and/or analysis workload you like - that's all it takes, right?

Actually, that's kind of not how it works.

This thing called ‘optimization' is one of those often used industry buzzwords that unfortunately gets way overused to the point where its initial method and meaning becomes dangerously diluted.

What is workload optimization anyway?
Any cloud workload can essentially be broken down into four component elements, or characteristics if you prefer:

  • Compute, computation and processing (all three mean the same thing)
  • Storage, backup and data retrieval
  • Networking and software-defined intelligence
  • Memory

Being able to determine what type of workload you have should not be the tough part here. Knowing what type of core DNA and style of application or data use case we are talking about should give us a broad idea of what kind of workload we have in hand - deeper analysis for more fine-grained behavioural characteristics may also be necessary.

Is this something of a surprise?
Do you feel suddenly ‘hard done by' after the promise of cloud was supposed to be a kind of ‘unlimited anything,' i.e., a method of IT with enough scalability to sink a battleship? Don't be too worried, this is just the kind of more granular approach we would take to any technology once it starts to develop and mature.

We don't have to look far to see how much focus vendors are placing on optimization intelligence today. HP has this month announced the general availability of HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0, its integrated enterprise cloud solution - it comes with a new HP ConvergedSystem 700 platform and this is a workload optimized infrastructure purpose-built for HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0.

Is the message getting through yet? IT infrastructure optimization itself has a variety of layers in and of itself.

A workload optimized infrastructure
We know that firms in all verticals are attracted by the promise of the cloud to speed service delivery, lower costs and increase the efficiency of the datacenter. But getting the right cloud in the right shape for the right workload with the right optimization parameters laid down is not achieved with the requisite amount of controls and planning.

Setting up a new cloud instance is easy; it can be done in something under 60-seconds a lot of the time with most hosting providers. Establishing and then successfully deploying a workload optimized cloud with an intelligently engineered connection to the right software-defined infrastructure underneath is... well, it's not a 60-second job and that's why we're talking about it here.
