IIoT Top News: IoT Security is More than a Firewall

For years, the manufacturing and oil and gas industries have incorporated IoT solutions to improve the efficiency, cost and quality of real-time data networks. The more digitized these industries become, the more data is left to secure. That’s why this week’s top news is focused on IoT security.

Jesse DePinto with BizTimes writes, “The Industrial Internet (also known as Industry 4.0, the Industrial Internet of Things or IIoT) is perhaps the most valuable segment of the IoT market, with an estimated economic impact of up to $3.7 trillion, roughly one-third of the total IoT value.”

This valuable IoT data needs to be protected from hackers, device breaches, back door security issues, viruses and the threat of stolen information. InfoWorld thinks it is time for security IoT standards, and once those standards are established insurance agencies are ready to secure your data—as long as you can prove you are using an approved method of IoT security.

Naturally, as the world continues to be connected — with around 200 billion devices connected in homes, offices and cars expected by 2020 — Washington policy makers and watch dogs are increasingly concerned with the level of security available for IoT. It’s clear the IoT and big data movements are shifting focus towards security, but ABI Research warns this isn’t going to be a one-size-fits-all solution. Different types of data collected, embedded and housed on devices will all need IoT security that fits their exclusive needs. Now, Gartner predicts that by the year 2018, “20 percent of small buildings will have suffered digital vandalism.” This cyber violation is reason enough to work with developers to continue to improve IoT security to protect the data as it transmits to sensors and back to the main core access layer.

IoT security kicked off the week with a piece about the need for security prioritization and understanding of the complexity and risk of navigating security in the industrial IoT. Later in the week, we learned oil and gas is powering up more IoT security to combat the combination of bring-your-own-device platforms being used across these networks. We finished the week learning that failure to protect the IoT is a threat to the tech industry as we grab hold of the next manufacturing revolution.

Hope you enjoy this week’s reading. As always, tell us what we missed!

IoT Security Needs to Stop Being an Afterthought (PCR)

In the age of smart homes and smart devices it is time to improve the IoT security across the board. The Internet Society (ISOC) recently released a white paper stating, “the vendors who use IoT should take more responsibility for the security issues that can occur with IoT products.”

Navigating Industrial IoT Risk and Complexity (Aerospace Manufacturing and Design)

Connecting industrial IoT can offer real-time data solutions for the industry, but with the increasing demand for IoT comes the added risk of how to secure it properly. Erik Starkloff believes that “the need for security on the IIoT smart utility grid increases as information on the grid becomes more accessible, because of the damage a security breach can inflict.”

Energy Sector Powers Up IoT (BizTech)

The oil and gas industry has been implementing IoT solutions for years to help deliver real-time data. Recently, the level of secure data transmission in these IoT networks has come under fire. Jim Guinn, Accenture’s global leader for cybersecurity, suggests that “the intersection of the IoT and bring-your-own-device programs creates a perfect storm that enterprises must learn to navigate.”

Failing to Protect ‘Internet of Things’ Data is Biggest Threat to Tech, Says Symantec, Cisco, RSA Security (International Business Times)

Customers need to trust that companies will store their information safety and securely within the IoT.  Schrecker says, “The way to protect IoT devices effectively is to protect a device, protect the communications sent between each device, and then monitor what happens on each device.”

The Industrial Internet: The Next Wave in Manufacturing Technology

The IIoT is the next manufacturing revolution, where predictive analytics and real-time data solutions flow within the IoT. DePinto stresses the importance: “To harness the true value of the Industrial Internet, manufacturers will have to integrate their operational technology into their information technology; this is known as the convergence of IT and OT.”

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
