Sun Microsystems' Chief Scientist Bill Joy to Leave Company

Sun Microsystems' Chief Scientist Bill Joy to Leave Company

(September 9, 2003) – Sun Microsystems' chief scientist, Bill Joy, is leaving the company he cofounded in 1982. Joy's responsibilities will transition to Greg Papadopoulos, chief technology officer and executive vice president, Sun Microsystems.

"Bill will continue to be an inspiration to all innovators," said Scott McNealy, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Sun Microsystems. "Bill's many contributions, including those to Java technology, SPARC, and Solaris Operating System, have helped define Sun as one of the most innovative and inspired places on the planet. We thank Bill for the strong legacy of innovation that he leaves in the hearts and souls of every Sun employee. He leaves behind an incredibly strong team of innovators."

"I am very proud of my accomplishments and the strong team we have built over the last two decades. I wish all those who continue at Sun great success in carrying on those things I have helped start, as well as all their other and future endeavors," said Joy. "For 21 years, I've enjoyed the opportunities for innovation provided to me at Sun, but I have decided the time is now right for me to move on to different challenges."

Joy, 48, said he has no immediate plans, except to not think about business too seriously for another year or two. When asked why he was leaving, Joy replied: "There is never a good time. Probably the better question is why I stayed so long. I didn't intend to stay at one company for so long."

Sun Microsystems' Chief Scientist Bill Joy is a great person and contributed well in Solaris. He did many great jobs. My SUN Microsystems friends are missing him really.

I was watching a program titled "The Future of China" on C-Span the other day which stated wonderful Bill was over in China helping the "mafia" government develop a police-state SMART CARD for every Chinaman. The program was alerting us that most of the products made in China is made by prison labor. They also said any rich person needing an organ or body part can merely alert the authorities & the Chinese "match" will be executed.

As Neil Belford says, Bill made Sun special. I'd want know what degree of evangelism and tech remains on this "eclipsed-Sun"

Bill Joy made Sun special by his presence. I wish them all well, but I'm not really sure if Sun still has a raison d'etre

Wasn't Bill Joy recently quoted as saying that we'd soon create an artificially intelligent strain of machines that would essentially spell the end of mankind? Just wondering if any thoughts of that ilk had anything to do with his exit.
