Sun Rolls Out its First Xeon Quads

Both can be had with Windows, Linux or Solaris

Sun Tuesday spit out its first quad-core Xeon servers, one of which it reckons is the world's smallest four-socket x64 server, the Sun Fire X4450. The other is called the Sun Fire X4150. Both can be had with Windows, Linux or Solaris.

The 4450, which takes Xeon 7300s, is supposed to be the first and only 2U four-socket quad coming from a tier one vendor. Sun claims it offers twice the compute power and memory capacity at 50% lower energy consumption than rivals. Entry-level pricing will starts at $8,895 when it becomes available in October.

The 4150, which takes Xeon 5300s, is a two-socket 1U said to have twice the memory capacity, internal storage and networking connectivity as other two-socket 1Us. It can accommodate 1TB of internal disk storage. The 4150 is available now starting at $2,995.

The boxes use a new shared chassis design.
