Sun Java Desktop System, Release 2 Includes New Tools, Online Updates

Sun Microsystems has announced Release 2 of its Sun Java Desktop System. The new release is essentially the same as the previous one, but with new centralized software management and configuration features, new development tools, expanded language support, and a Java-based online update client.

New features in Release 2 include:

End User Tools:

  • Java System Update Service - Automated delivery and installation of software updates and patching to ensure systems are secure and up-to-date.
  • Expanded language support to Brazilian Portuguese (User Interface only), Japanese and Korean
  • GNOME Input Method Language Engine (GIMLET) to change the character set on the keyboard, to change for example, from English to Japanese.

    System Management Tools:

  • Java Desktop System Configuration Manager, Release 1 - Define groups of users and the policies for access rights and settings.
  • Sun Control Station 2.1 - Remotely deploy and manage desktop applications over a distributed computing environment enabling volume software push, patching, updating multiple desktops.
  • Remote Desktop Takeover - Remote administration including viewing and interacting with users desktop display to help, guide and troubleshoot.

    As a bonus, purchasers of Sun Java Desktop System Release 2 also receive the Sun Java Studio Standard 5 update 1 Technology Preview, the NetBeans IDE 3.6, and J2SE1.4.2_04, which includes the SDK. p In the fourth quarter of 2004, Java Desktop System, Release 3 will introduce support for the Solaris Operating System, Calendar Connector for Microsoft Exchange, support for assistive technologies for people with disabilities, and other usability improvements.
