Vintela Inc, a sister of SCO’s by virtue of being funded out of the same Canopy Group pocket and a partner of Microsoft’s by virtue of their mutual interest in UNIX and Linux, says it has extended SMS to seamlessly manage UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X environments.
It has just released Vintela Management Extensions (VMX) 1.0 and says the thing provides an extensible framework for managing and monitoring non-Windows clients natively from inside SMS 2003.
The widgetry, which uses a WBEM/CIM-based architecture as well as the same data stores, classes, objects and attributes as SMS, is an SMS administration console snap-in and client meant to make multi-platform administration more tolerable and cost-effective and keep everything safely within Microsoft’s orbit.
