JFluid To Be Integrated Into Java Studio IDE

"A very aggressive effort to improve the productivity of individual developers"

Sun is taking an important step towards the commercialization of an experimental Java performance measurement tool. JFluid, as the tool is known, will make the move from Sun's research lab, where it has been for the past two years, into the software division. It is expected that the software will be made available in April 2005, with the release of Java Studio integrated development environment (IDE).

Misha Dmitriev, who led the JFluid development team, was transferred from Sun Labs to the software group last week, an indication that the program is moving along. While there are several Java profilers on the market, they are sold as standalone products. JFluid will be the first profiler integrated into an IDE.

JFluid is expected to work much faster than the current crop of testing tools. What makes JFluid unique, says Sun, is its ability to test code selectively. Developers can turn the program on or off at will. Furthermore, the entire Java application does not have to be tested. Developers can test only those parts which they are interested in - a feature which will speed up application development time.

Rich Unger, a member of the NetBeans Governance Board and a software engineer at Nuance Communications, said, "In general, profilers are a real drag on performance. If you're trying to find a memory leak that only manifests itself after a 20-minute operation, it can take a few hours running under a profiler to get to that point."

Profiling tools have been around for years. However, as developers take on those responsibilities which have historically belonged to quality assurance or operations, more and more tools are being built into development applications.

Dan Scholler, vice president of technology research services at Meta Group, noted, "Tools are catching up and building in all of this stuff...that has historically been done after the fact. What we are seeing is a very aggressive effort to improve the productivity of individual developers."

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
