Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has set Jan. 7 as the launch date for his open-source search project, dubbed Wikia Search. According to the Washington Post Wales, who has described Yahoo! and Google as opaque services that don't explain how results are arrived at, says the project will allow technology enthusiasts to help filter sites and rank search results, using a community model akin to that of Wikipedia.

Wales's contention is that search needs to be reinvented, freeing "the judgment of information from invisible rules inside an algorithmic black box."

As previously reported, first Wales set up a LAMP-based project called Search Wikia to build a new for-profit search platform out of open source search protocols - like the open source Lucene search engine widgetry - and Wikipedia-like human collaboration. Then he acquired the Grub web crawler from LookSmart Ltd, an online targeted advertising company and open sourced it.
