Sun Explains Recent Security Initiatives At RSA Conference

John Loiacono's Keynote Address Will Discuss Security

At the RSA Conference underway in San Francisco, Sun announced that it will continue to expand its security initiatives designed to make customers' businesses more secure, efficient and readily compliant. In a keynote address on Thursday, February 17, John Loiacono, executive vice president of software at Sun, will elaborate on this strategy, and discuss the challenges that today's enterprises face when attempting to deliver both control and agility.

He said, "Absolute security will never exist. Organizations must build trust, not walls as security becomes a critical part of decentralized network services. For 24 years, Sun has met the demands of the world's most security-minded organizations to help them adapt to rapidly changing security challenges and requirements."

At the conference, Sun plans to announce new product features and enhancements and partner initiatives that help customers achieve secure systems, secure identities and secure applications. Other Sun speakers at RSA conference this week include CTO, Whitfield Diffie, who headlines a cryptographers panel, and vice president of identity management Sara Gates, who will speak on auditing the identity infrastructure for better security and compliance.

Security updates are readily apparent in a range of Sun products. In the recent release of its Solaris 10 Operating System, Sun provides customers with breakthrough new security technologies like process and user rights management, Predictive Self Healing, Solaris Containers, a new cryptographic framework based on the PKCS#11 standard, and digitally-signed binaries including utilities, libraries and kernel modules.

Sun's new secure execution capability enables customers to know whether a disk has been opened at any time. This can offer an added layer of security, verifying that customers' code has not been modified at any time after it was produced by Sun - or any other vendor - protecting users from Trojan horses and other malicious code threats. And, Solaris 10 can be automated with scripts to provide assurance against both accidental or malicious tampering. Future Solaris 10 updates will have automatic run-time verification.
