OpenSolaris Community Advisory Board Members Announced

2 Members From Sun, 3 From the Wider Develoer Community

"The formation of the Community Advisory Board is another major step forward in making OpenSolaris a reality," said John Loiacono, Sun's executive vice president, Software, as Sun today announced the names of the five individuals selected to participate in OpenSolaris's Community Advisory Board (CAB).

The CAB was created "to steward the evolution of the OpenSolaris community towards self-governance," said Sun in its announcement, and its members are as follows:

  • Al Hopper, engineer consultant, Logical Approach
  • Rich Teer, independent Solaris consultant and author of "Solaris Systems Programming"
  • Roy Fielding, chief scientist at Day Software and co-founder and member, the Apache Software Foundation
  • Simon Phipps, chief technology evangelist, Sun
  • Casper Dik, senior staff engineer, Sun.

The five member board consists of two members who were nominated and elected by the OpenSolaris pilot community (Hopper and Teer) and three others appointed by Sun - two from within Sun (Phipps, Dik)) and one from the open source community (Fielding).

"These five individuals are passionate about open source and will be instrumental in growing the Solaris community and the promotion of new innovations," Loiacono said.

The next steps in the evolution of OpenSolaris.org will, according to the community's web site, be as follows:

"Now that it is fully formed, the CAB will begin the process of writing its own charter and addressing all the issues necessary to develop a governance proposal that can be debated, iterated, and ratified by Sun and the OpenSolaris community.

The CAB is currently evaluating the initial co-development proposal that was made available to the pilot community and will help refine it before launch. Moving forward, the OpenSolaris community, the CAB, and Sun will collaborate closely on a community-focused development model."

Sun plans to release buildable source code for the Solaris 10 Operating System under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) in the second quarter of 2005.
