Vertica Systems Launches Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud - Industry's First On-Demand Analytic Database Service Hosted in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)

Vertica further revolutionizes economics of business analytics by providing breakthrough database performance on a pay-as-you-go

ANDOVER, Mass., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Vertica today unveiled the Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud, a new, on-demand version of its blazingly fast, grid-enabled columnar database hosted on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). The new pay-as-you-go offering enables companies to create large, high-performance analytic data marts without upfront data center costs and delays. Vertica for the Cloud completely changes the economics of business analytics, making it economically feasible to rapidly initiate a much broader spectrum of analytic projects and businesses.

Cloud computing is a new paradigm that gives companies the benefits of hosted software -- applications, servers, security, networking and storage running on a virtual grid computing environment managed by a third party. This approach frees companies to focus more of their resources on their core technology and business competencies. Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud enables these companies to create additional competitive advantage by giving more people the ability to analyze more data faster.

The cloud scales on-demand -- additional servers are added to a user's cluster as workloads demand. Vertica for the Cloud is the only analytic database designed to be as elastic as the cloud. Its unique shared-nothing architecture, aggressive data compression and grid-based failover and recovery make it uniquely suited to process terabytes of data fast and economically on a 24x7 basis.

Digital content archiving solution provider Sonian Inc. is using Vertica for the Cloud to create its own Amazon EC2-based service that enables companies to store and search massive amounts of e-mails, instant messages and other digital content. "Our clients need to store and easily access hundreds of terabytes of data to comply with digital content management mandates," said Sonian CTO Greg Arnette. "Using the Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud on Amazon EC2 allows us to build highly differentiated database performance into the Sonian Archive SA2 digital archiving service, while at the same time helping us preserve precious start-up capital by eliminating the time and cost of developing our own in-house data center."

Analytics on demand

Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud is the smart choice for young companies like Sonian who provide outsourced analytic-intensive services to their clients. It also benefits large organizations by giving them the flexibility to fund a wider variety of analytic database projects and initiate them faster. Because there are no long-term financial commitments required, lines of business can pay monthly Vertica for the Cloud usage fees out of the operating expense budgets they control rather than going through lengthy capital expenditure approval processes. Companies can fund departmental, proof of concept and ad-hoc analytic data marts on-demand, gaining the business agility to respond to analytic requirements faster than the competition.

Key Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud benefits include: -- Fastest "Time to Terabyte" -- Visit http://www.vertica.com/cloud to sign up and have a fully provisioned analytic database ready for data loading and querying within minutes -- no waiting weeks to procure, install and configure a database server grid; -- Fastest analytic performance -- More than 100x faster than any other database in the cloud; -- Lowest startup cost -- No upfront hardware, data center or administration overhead. Customers only pay for database usage. When they stop using it, they stop paying for it; -- Painless scalability -- Customers can increase/decrease the scale of their instance seamlessly and instantly as data volume changes; -- 24x7 analytics in the cloud -- Data redundancy, failover and recovery are automatically handled by Vertica making it the only failure-resilient analytic cloud database; -- Smallest cloud footprint -- Vertica for the Cloud compresses data by up to 90 percent, thus lowering resource costs and improve query performance; and -- Proven hosted platform -- Hosted by Amazon Web Services, with its proven data center resources.

"Planning for future database storage and query needs is an inexact science at best, often costing companies millions more than they really need to spend because they bought based on maximum usage estimates," said Vertica CEO Ralph Breslauer. "We've taken the guesswork out of the process with Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud. It assures customers they will only pay for what they need, while delivering the query performance to help companies capitalize on business opportunities when they arise."

Amazon and Vertica

Vertica and Amazon are working together to promote cloud-based analytic data management with Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud. On May 22 at 2 p.m. EDT, the two companies are co-sponsoring a Webinar entitled "Analytic Data Management in the Cloud with Vertica and Amazon Web Services." During the Webinar, a live demonstration of the database will be presented. To sign up for the Webinar, visit https://vertica.webex.com/vertica/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=557979271.

If you’re responsible for an application that depends on the data or functionality of various IoT endpoints – either sensors or devices – your brand reputation depends on the security, reliability, and compliance of its many integrated parts. If your application fails to deliver the expected business results, your customers and partners won't care if that failure stems from the code you developed or from a component that you integrated. What can you do to ensure that the endpoints work as expect...

Complete Internet of Things (IoT) embedded device security is not just about the device but involves the entire product’s identity, data and control integrity, and services traversing the cloud. A device can no longer be looked at as an island; it is a part of a system. In fact, given the cross-domain interactions enabled by IoT it could be a part of many systems. Also, depending on where the device is deployed, for example, in the office building versus a factory floor or oil field, security ha...
