Mindspeed(R) Debuts a Complete Suite of Low-Power 11.3G Chipsets for SONET/SDH, Ethernet, Fibre Channel and Fiber-to-the-Premise Applications

New Laser Drivers and Amplifiers Address Power, Performance and Cost Needs for a Broad Range of Optical Transceivers, Including SFP+

NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/29/09 -- Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced one of the industry's highest functionality chipsets for 10 Gigabit serial optical links. Building on the company's expertise in the Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (GEPON) and Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) marketplace and cultivated by three generations of 10 Gigabit products, Mindspeed's newest offering provides a complete serial link solution for applications to 11.3Gbps.

"Recognizing the growing needs of customers, we've invested in innovations to increase functionality, reduce size and drive system costs down," said Hasnain Bajwa, Mindspeed's senior vice president and general manager, lightspeed connectivity solutions. "Our new chipset includes the world's first dual rate 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps transimpedance amplifiers, post amplifiers with internal digital controls and laser drivers with optical modulation amplitude control."

Mindspeed's new 11.3 Gbps product offering includes a high sensitivity multi-rate limiting transimpedance amplifier (TIA), a linear TIA with low total harmonic distortion (THD), linear and limiting post-amplifiers with digital controls, directly modulated laser (DML) and vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) drivers with optical modulation amplitude (OMA) control and an electro-absorption (EA) modulator driver.

Technical Details

The M02129 TIA supports dual data rates of 1.25 Gbps and 10.3 Gbps, making it the industy's first rate-selectable TIA for 1 Gbps/10 Gbps Ethernet. Featuring -21dBm OMA sensitivity at 1.25 Gbps and -17.5dbm OMA sensitivity at 10.3 Gbps, the M02129 is ideal for systems requiring backward compatibility. The M02130 linear TIA is intended for use in equalized systems where low-distortion is required. Featuring < four percent THD over the range of -17dbm to +1dbm OMA, the M02130 passes the stress tests imposed by the 802.3 10GBASE-LRM standard.

The 11.3 Gbps post amplifier (M02142) and linear amplifier (M02143) are among the industry's first post amplifiers to have internal digital controls. The M02142 features 5mV input sensitivity with loss-of-signal (LOS) circuitry capable of supporting out-of-band (OOB) signaling. Programmable LOS and output de-emphasis can be accessed via the two wire interface, while an analog only mode may be used in more traditional applications which only require the small size, low-power and class-leading sensitivity. The M02143 is a differential gain amplifier for linear systems with 3.3mV sensitivity at 11.3 Gbps and a maximum four percent THD. The post amplifiers are available in an industry standard 3mm x 3mm quad flat no-lead (QFN) package.

The M02170 DML driver provides up to 85mA of modulation current and 150mA of bias current, while the M02171 VCSEL driver provides up to 15mA of modulation and 15mA of bias current for VCSEL applications. The M02172 EA modulator driver delivers up to 2.5V p-p into a 50 ohm modulator with 0-1V offset control and up to 150mA of bias current. All drivers include circuitry to facilitate extensive monitoring and control and are available in an industry standard 5mm x 5mm QFN package.

When combined with the M02129 TIA and M02142 post amplifier, the M02170 laser driver and M02171 VCSEL driver provide a total solution capable of supporting the < 1W transceiver power demanded for small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) applications.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
