Gateway CEO Ted Waitt said that Intel threatened to turn his company into 'guacamole' if it didn't continue to use only Intel chips in its personal computers. This and other interesting tidbits regarding the new AMD/Intel lawsuit were revealed by John Dvorak in his recent interview with SYS-CON.TV.
Gateway, which relocated its headquarters from humble South Dakota to more glamorous San Diego a few years ago and has suffered declining market share since that time, will be among the companies expected to be featured prominently in the AMD/Intel suit, which is centered around marketing and licensing practices rather than technology, Dvorak said. ![]() John C. Dvorak Ted Waitt guacamole "They've been doing this to each other for years," Dvorak said, noting that this was just the latest in a long-running string of lawsuits between the two companies, "and this suit is no surprise." Dvorak pointed out that during the Justice Department's pursuit of Microsoft a few years ago, one of Microsoft's key defense strategies in the court of public opinion was "Hey, why us? Intel is a lot worse than we are." Dvorak also offered opinions on the relevance of Java and Sun Microsystems, the role of PR professionals in today's technology industry, and many other topics in a wide-ranging interview.
