Sun Backs TopCoder Contests
Sun Microsystems teamed up with TopCoder to bring the JavaOne Coding Challenge to conference attendees, and will also be the title sponsor of the 2005 TopCoder Open (TCO). The 2005 TopCoder Open will bring professional and collegiate developers together for international ranking, celebrity and a share of the $150,000 prize purse. The Onsite Finals will take place October 12th through 14th at the Santa Clara Marriott in Santa Clara, CA.

Sun Has a Laptop?
Sun Microsystems Inc. has introduced its first-ever notebook computer as the network computer maker seeks to encourage increasingly mobile software developers to write programs built on Sun technology. The 'Sun Ultra 3 Mobile Workstation' uses Sun's Sparc microprocessor and lets engineers and system administrators and other users of Sun products to run the same applications as on large, mid-range servers and workstations, which are powerful computers used by engineers and scientists.

Kicking the Tires on Java 5.0
I'm really jazzed about Java 5.0! We've been treated over the years to incremental improvements in JVM performance. JDK 1.2 brought us the collections framework as well as Swing, the thread context class loader, and improvements in RMI. JDK 1.3 and 1.4 continued in the same vain with logical improvements to libraries, JVM enhancements, and performance upgrades. Although this article doesn't intend to take trip down memory lane, it's important to understand that Java 5.0 brings a truly remarkable and rich set of new tools to our programming landscape as compared to other JDK releases.
